From Gold, to Brown, to Green
A Case Study for Village Center at Gold Hill Mesa

Economic reality has produced a paradigm shift in new development in the last years resulting in an increased demand for added value in every project and continual improvement in the ‘ROI of Sustainability’ for developers.

Using LEED-ND, a new Village Center for Gold Hill Mesa brings innovation to an economically resilient, environmentally-oriented, near-zero energy, reclaimed brownfield site in Colorado Springs. The efficiency of combining soil remediation, low impact hillside infrastructure, buildings integrated into the hillside, and lessons of incremental development make for a true ‘un-siloed’ holistically sustainable project!

    Learning Objectives

    • Verbalize the opportunities of a challenging hillside site used to create an integrated framework for buildings and infrastructure.
    •  Compare the Brownfield site used to expand the concept of infill development while provide advantages of renewable energy placement opportunities, instead of other possible sites.
    • Specify the form based coding of mixed-used projects to create a development using durable, highly efficient buildings in which uses can quickly change to adapt to current market conditions.

    Presenters
Mark Tremmel, John Olson, & Larry Gilland from Collaborative Design Group

Graywater Reclamation and Use in Commercial and Residential Applications

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, only 1% of the earth’s water supply is available for drinking. Yet, Americans are using potable water for more than just drinking. In the residential and commercial sectors, it’s used for cooking, cleaning, water parks, and in lavatories. Potable water is also used heavily in industrial applications for these activities, as well as cooling, processing, diluting, and fabricating.

Water that can be reclaimed and reused for non-drinking purposes is referred to as graywater. This presentation will provide an overview of the ways in which graywater can be incorporated in both residential and commercial applications, including cooling water, landscaping, irrigation, toilet flushing, and certain construction activities. The presentation will also address existing barriers to graywater reuse and identify ways to potentially overcome those barriers, such as working with utilities to establish incentive programs.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Understand the definition of "graywater" as well as its potential uses in commercial and residential applications.
    • Understand typical barriers to graywater reclamation and reuse (e.g., cost or public health concerns) and ways to potentially overcome those obstacles.
    • Understand the basics of a reuse system and how it interacts with different systems in a facility, such as irrigation or plumbing.
    • Identify if graywater reclamation would be a good fit for a project in terms of economics, local regulations, treatment requirements, and size/location of system.

Attendees will participate via WebEx. A strong internet connection and phone line is recommended.

This course qualifies from 1.5 GBCI CE hours.

Relevance of Regenerative Design to the Building Construction Industry

Please join us for our July First Monday Speaker series as we focus on defining regenerative in a way that is relevant to the building construction industry.

We will start off with why we need to be building regenerative buildings today. Then we will explore the various definitions of regenerative design from the universe scale to the watershed scale to the building scale.

Different perspectives on the definition will be provided – one from building architectural perspective and one from an energy perspective. We will describe regenerative as it relates to one building, to one building with one site, to multiple buildings on one site, and try to understand what it means to meet the goal of regenerative and is it even possible at the micro level.

    Featured Speakers:
    Renee Azerbegi, Ambient Energy
    Beth Mosenthal, Gensler
    Greg Dorolek, Wenk Associates

    Learning Objectives:

-Explore definitions of regenerative from the macro systems scale to the micro building scale.

-Provide perspectives on regenerative from the architectural, mechanical /electrical, and landscape/civil disciplines.

-Bring regenerative processes down to implementable steps on your next building project.
