    Acoustics
    Part 3 of 4

With so many detailed considerations and constraints in building design and construction, why would anyone add ‘acoustics’ to the list of concerns? We know that the positive impact of good acoustics in schools, but does it really matter in other building types? Many think that it does.  The well-being, productivity and even the ability to effectively communicate can be hampered by bad acoustics.  But the conversation of acoustics doesn't stop there. How many times has a meeting, or a good-nights-sleep been interrupted by outside noise? Acoustic design even impacts the exterior design of our home and other buildings. Through three LEED Pilot Credits, we explore strategies for high quality interior and exterior acoustical performance.

This session is registered for 1.5 hours of LEED Specific (BD+C, ID+C, O+M, HOMES, ND) GBCI hours as well as 1.5 AIA/CES LU/HSW/SD hours.

Film Event - Biomimicry: Learning From Nature

    Description:

This two-part series is based on the acclaimed book, "Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature", by Janine Benyus. Biomimicry (from 'bios' meaning life, and 'mimesis' meaning to imitate) is a new science that studies nature's best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems.

The programs put us in touch with men and women who believe our teachers are all around us. These biomimics are learning from our fellow earthlings - the ecological survivors who have prospered for millions of years. They've survived and met their needs while creating conditions conducive to life for all others around them.

After 3.8 billion years, `life' knows what works and what lasts on earth. Mimicking these designs and strategies - their recipes - could change the way we grow food, harness solar energy, run businesses, even the way we make materials.

The two programs introduce us to several scientists, businesspeople, and authors in this field. Featured in the first program are: Wes Jackson of The Land Institute in Texas; Ray Anderson, CEO of Interface, Inc.; Paul Hawken, author "Natural Capitalism"; and of course Janine Benyus, who co-hosts the program. In the second program we meet Herbert Waite, a biologist at USC - Santa Barbara; Robin Garrell, an organic chemist at UCLA; and Jeff Brinker of Sandia National Labs.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Working with nature to developing ideas that create a healthier world.
    2. Learning from nature:  Instead of dominating nature work with it.
    3. Identify techniques and materials that will work with natures evolution.
    4.  Analyze how natural organisms adapt over time and learn how we can adapt too.

Cost: Free - Donations are accepted

      Net Zero Best Practices
Lessons Learned Building the NREL Research Support Facility

The presentation discussed the lessons learned during the design and construction of the NREL RSF. We first explain net zero as defined by Paul Torcellini and Shanti Pless of NREL. We then explore how the design team shaped the building to maximize daylighting and natural ventilation techniques. We touch on the mechanical systems and strategies including direct evaporative cooling of the data center. We present information on the photovoltaic array on the roof and how the array ties into the electrical system of the building. This was a complex, interesting project that sets the building energy use standard for the coming decades.

      • Define Net Zero as it relates to ground-up new construction building projects.
      • Compare Performance COntracting as it relates to the RSF facility with traditional contracting mechanisms and evaluate how this contributed to the overall achievement of the project goals.
      • Identify and analyze systems and strategies related to the following topics and their effects on Net Zero Energy goals:
           a.light fixture selection
           b.lighting control system selection
           c.daylighting strategies
           d.natural ventilation and building automation
           e. HVAC & mechanical systems
      • Specify lessons learned and best practices from participating in the NREL RSF project and how those lessons learned have been applied to subsequent projects.
