Deconstruction, or the systematic recycling of unwanted buildings, is an emerging strategy in the green building industry. In 2008 NCC created and implemented the DeConstructTM Training Program (http://www.nccraftsmanship.org/educational-programs/deconstruction/), bringing together private property owners, high school and college youth, community volunteers, local contractors, business people, and municipal and county government. Since that time, NCC has completed nineteen DeConstructTM projects; logging more than 15,000 volunteer hours, diverting nearly 2000 tons of waste from local landfills, and providing more than a quarter million dollars in tax incentives for donors. Neil Kaufman, NCC's Executive Director, will provide detailed information on the DeConstructTM model and discuss the potential for deconstruction to generate LEED credits as well as significant financial incentives for qualifying projects.
